[break][break] the drum beats of war had sounded from the moment that CALYREX had issued warning of the upcoming conflict.

[break][break] calamity was on the horizon, and kyle lopez's death had been one of the many things to shape it.

PYRE. his two dragapult disappear like wisps of light into the air, just as his gengar manifests in a glow of obsidan light and disappears in equal search of any footprints. of any of the things that would have killed someone as powerful at kyle lopez.

It was a reasonable thing to be suspicious of. She knew little of Kyle until word filled HQ. She could hardly grab a cup of coffee without hearing whispers of the champion or some conspiracy therein. [break][break]

"Sometimes, people that reach the status of living legend seem more invincible than they are. These figures... why, it seems to contradict reality for them to pass." She understood it well. No one had accepted her grandfather's death in Galar for the longest time - someone as decorated as him was not one to face the reaper in his sleep. There had been lengthy investigations into other causes, but sometimes a man in his eighties just went into that good night. [break][break]

"That said," Ameena had to offer a counterpoint as they traversed the rough terrain. "The timing is wildly suspicious. With everyone getting their moving parts into place right now, it feels like the perfect trap for us. We can let our guard down because they're down a strong man, because their morale is low, and then... they strike." She wasn't one to believe things she didn't personally witness outside of what was reported by her most trusted colleagues. [break][break]

Science, frequently, was re-tracing steps to make sure no one previous had cut corners or smudged data to reach their personal or professional goals. "If you were afraid of war, what would you be willing to do?"

[break][break] bitterness and resentment swelled in his heart as he remembered the moments of the last Rocket meeting, in which they'd discussed rocket's most imminent threat. unlike the others, jayden knew better than to underestimate their organization's most consistent enemy.

He doesn't engage in the hypothetical, which brought a smile to her face. She felt the best way to create a strategy was to get in the minds of the enemy, and she figured the League had little interest in war, but she could see Jayden had no desire to imagine what it was like to want to avoid the impending war. She had heard quite a few opinions about it, particularly that a different city would be more ideal. Still, most everyone had accepted the war as inevitable. Perhaps, it truly was. "When you say war is how we will win," she started, falling in line behind him and letting the somber setting rest over her like a warm blanket, "are you referring to the taking of a city, or the entire region?" [break][break]

The way pokemon were stockpiling and people were anxiously reinforcing their homesteads made it clear to her that everyone knew something was coming, and something big. It seemed like this would be the opening gambit in an actual, full-blown takeover. Her military background had not left her with a strong taste for living out Kanto, though of course the timeline hadn't worked out for her to step foot there at all, but it seemed she would get an opportunity to revisit it all the same. [break][break]

"Maybe we are as prepared as we can be," she mused, "but I think there is more chipping away to do at their defenses before making an assault. Kyle is one thing, but their resources and people still outnumber ours." Mostly. She didn't know the true expanse of Rocket's resources, but they were outmanned. Thankfully, citizens would work against the League as they were honor-bound to protect the innocent, and Rocket had no such qualms.

She's stunned as he asks for her suggestion. She hadn't considered her proposal to be pulled from the abstract and rendered on the center stage of their conversation. She takes a moment to think, staring out at the horizon rather than scouring the ground for information as they should be doing. [break][break]

"The recent poisonings have left them weakened, so I understand wanting to tackle things now, but I think we should have focused on giving them another resource drain before launching an assault." Rangers were still handing out antidotes and even rowdy civilians had cut back on political demonstrations in favor of mutual aid. "The toxic chains were an opportunity to continue sowing disorder. We could have manipulated swarms of pokemon into larger acts of environmental damage, and the aggressive behavior would have been waved away as a toxic chain consequence."[break][break]

Tauros swarms could have stampeded into cities, wild mankey could have descended upon fields and claimed harvests, chimchar or growlithe setting fields ablaze. "Having Rangers split between humanitarian aid and environmental damage control would have spread them so thin across the region that a coordinated attack on a specific location would face little resistance." Not that she knew for sure they were only planning to attack one location. The war plans were a vague and abstract notion to someone like her who lacked the clearance for finer details. [break][break]

She focused on him, now. "You do not think we have shown our hand? The entire region - nay, the world, I suspect - knows something is coming. While that fear is imprecise... I wonder if we have created more casualties for ourselves in letting tensions build instead of creating further distractions." The loss of Kyle was an excellent blow, but something broader and not easily tracked to Rocket could have used up League resources without raising suspicion on Rocket nor inspiring Leaguers to prepare a counterattack. "If a Leaguer wanted revenge for Kyle," she impulsively asked, "who do you think they would take from us?"

[break][break] his eyes gleam then, with certain power. just like he had no doubt that declan walsh and rocket had a plan for the world's collapse when the meteor struck, he had similar faith that these recent machinations would reveal themselves in due time.

She hummed thoughtfully as he described the science division. Swarm behaviorism could not be considered an area of expertise for her, but she had done research on psychic influence on behavior, so perhaps that avenue could be fruitful, and they could manipulate wild swarms of pokemon to disrupt the League. She wasn't so sure about it being pointless to hide what was obvious, as subterfuge and false leads and misinformation were excellent tools of war, but perhaps it would have been pointless this time. [break][break]

Tensions had been brewing for too long for anything else to erupt. [break][break]

"I was thinking from their perspective. Who they might take as a tit for tat. But I really cannot say, now that you mention our unity. I suspect none of our publicly-known members appear weak enough to the League to try for. But they are certainly out for blood." Kyle made it personal. And personal made soldiers stupid, but also desperate. [break][break]

Mt. Pyre offered them no concrete proof of his passing, however. "I suppose we will know soon enough, as to your initial question. If the League had faked his death to have an upper hand against us in a battle, we will see it before long. If the League does nothing stupid, nothing extreme, in response to that death, I suspect something else is afoot." But death of a leader could rally an army just as much as it could cripple it. It wouldn't be long until the dust cleared.

He didn't speak like his purpose was to intimidate. Rather, it was so matter-of-fact in nature that he was easy to believe. She had little doubt that he was loyal to Rocket and that his certainty in their strength, in the inevitability of their victory, was real. That, or he was the best actor she had ever encountered in all her years. [break][break]

She wondered if she would see him on the battlefield, a hand buried in the chest of a League combatant. The image disappeared as quickly as it'd come. [break][break]

There was no clear evidence on the site. She was pleased that the meeting hadn't been a waste of time regardless. Jayden Cross was a hell of a Rocket to meet, and she was thankful it was before the war was truly in motion. "No time to waste," she echoed his sentiment. It was best to work efficiently, since war was a finger's breadth away.
